Connecting families through an engaging, informative voice-driven platform to learn about online safety together.
CHALLENGE
Research commissioned by O2 & NSPCC revealed that 1 in 4 children under the age of 13 receive inappropriate messages online. Parents were managing visible risks, like screen time, but many reported challenges when dealing with their children engaging with technology, with only 50% talking to their children about what they were actually doing on their devices. We set out to find a way to help facilitate these conversations, and support families as they learn about online safety together.
APPROACH
We wanted to create something that was educational, but also engaging and fun to maximise reach around this important topic.
So, we built ‘Parents vs Kids’, an interactive quiz designed for Alexa-enabled devices, to see who really knows more about the online world. ‘Alexa’ was joined to host the quiz by a couple of famous faces, with Richard Osman and Lauren Layfield playing the roles of our team leaders. This was part of our plan to help boost engagement, which also led to us building a rich database of questions to ensure that every time a family member played, they’d have new questions to answer. The key benefit of this was that it also maximises the amount of information reaching the players. We also created a 2-player version hosted on O2.co.uk to reach as many players as possible, alongside rich visual support to enhance the experience beyond audio on all platforms.
IMPACT
Our multi award-winning platform has seen over 1 million questions asked, with families engaged with the quiz for an average of 7’45” per session. This is testament to the success of our aim to build an engaging experience, while also facilitating what could be a difficult conversation and is a piece of work Bernadette is particularly proud of.
